On the 25th of April 2015 a terrible natural disaster struck Nepal. At 12 in the afternoon a 7.9 richter scale earthquake sent the whole country into a state of emergency, affecting millions of women, men and children. Being the biggest earthquake the country has seen in 80 years it has so far caused the death of more than 7000 people and destroyed over 120 000 homes - numbers that are only expected to rise as the true effects of the disaster is uncovered.

Due to this terrible occurance all of SASANE's work to stop human trafficking has come to a halt. Out of the 175 certified paralegals SASANE has empowered over the years, 90 % have now seen their homes completely destroyed and one of the paralegals tragically lost her life. At the moment SASANE is focusing on relieving and helping all of the affected paralegals and their families. Using the funds previously meant for the organisation's anti-trafficking projects SASANE has bought and distrubuted food and water to the areas where the affected paralegals lived. As seen on the pictures above the situtation for these villagers are very bad, and even the process of distributing these relief materials was difficult as there are many other victims on the route to the paralegal's villages demanding relief. Fortunately the SASANE staff managed to reach their destinations and provide temporarily relief to places the government aid has not yet reached.

However, this relief is only temporarily and the greater challenge is yet to come. The situation still remains - 90 % of the paralegals are now homeless and need long-term assistance in rebuilding new homes. Also the disaster has left many of the girls already vulnerable to trafficking even more vulnerable, as the country is in a state of disorganisation. SASANE aims to provide their paralegals affected by the earthquake with great support  and as soon as possible carry on with the important work to prevent trafficking.
